Nicholas Cage is starring in the role of Nicholas Cage.
These are spoiler-free thoughts on the new movie!
I have watched it and I loved it. But, what really got to me is not the fact that this is an original idea. It is the fact that Nicholas Cage has appeared or starred in so many movies that it was hard to find a role he did not already take on.
Well, this is one way to go about it. Because, he may have been a master criminal, a man who thinks he is a vampire, lunch for bees, but he has never starred as himself. And, this was very nicely done if I may say so.
By creating this role, the writers Tom Gromcian and Kevin Etten have addressed many of the urban legends and private things are known about Nick Cage. Like, the fact that he is prone to squandering every dime he makes, that he is obsessed with acting, or any of the other social media jokes about him, some perhaps less true than others.
The official plot without any major spoilers
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent follows Nick Cage as he is now facing bankruptcy and unfulfillment. He is becoming increasingly more difficult to work with and nobody wants to hire him. He eventually decides to quit acting, but, deep in debt, he is forced to accept an offer from a rich fan.
The offer is that Nick is to be paid $1 million bucks just to be a guest at this rich fan’s birthday party. However, it turns out the wealthy benefactor has ties to crime and is targeted by the CIA, who then recruit Cage for an unusual mission that takes him on a rollercoaster of challenges, both physical and emotional.
A rich cast
While Nick Cage is there as himself, other actors are interpreting various roles. Pedro Pascal masterfully portrays the rich birthday fan, while we also see Lily Mo Sheen, the daughter of Michael Sheen and Kate Beckinsale. The audience will also enjoy performances from Tiffany Haddish, Alessandra Mastronardi, Ike Barinholtz, and many more.
